Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today’s Throwback Thursday is from Tuesday, October 6, 2020. While Venice, Italy, is known for its bridges and waterways, I just remember how it smelled like sewage. I also remember our gondolier talking on his phone the whole time he was supposed to be gondoliering. Anyway, the reason for the sewage smell is that Venice floods every time there is a high tide. Thanks to a project known as MOSE, a technical acronym but also the Italian word for Moses, Venice won’t be flooding any more. Just as Moses parted the Red Sea, MOSE is a series of 78 mechanical barriers that cuts Venice off from the Adriatic Sea during high tide. Once the high tide subsides, the barriers are lowered back onto the sea floor. Watercraft that require access into Venice during MOSE deployment can enter through locks that are part of the system. Just before parting the Red Sea, Moses said to the Israelites, “…stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord”…I love that. God used Moses to reveal His salvation through the Red Sea, and Venice is using MOSE to affect its salvation from the Adriatic Sea. While climate change is being blamed for the necessity of MOSE, a Venetian official, very excited about the MOSE implementation, accidentally let the truth out when he said that Venice has been flooding for 1200 years; by my humble calculations, that is long before SUV-driving Capitalists roamed the earth.
