Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. The United States Navy was founded on this date in 1775, but not really. The Continental Navy of 1775 consisted of seven ships: The Alfred, The Columbus, The Andrew Doria, The Cabot, The Hornet, The Wasp, and The Fly. This fledgling Navy won several battles against British warships, but because most of the Revolutionary War was fought on land, most are unaware of these victories. The Continental Congress established the Continental Navy in 1775 to patrol and protect the Chesapeake Bay, but this navy was disbanded after the war. The United States Navy that we know today was formally established in April of 1798, twenty-three years after the Continental navy. Boats figure prominently in the Bible beginning with Noah’s Ark, continuing through Jonah’s sea escape, and ending with Paul’s maritime missionary journeys; however, only King Hiram of Tyre and King Solomon of Israel are said to have had navies. I Kings 9:26 states, “And King Solomon made a navy of ships in Eziongeber…on the shore of the Red Sea…” I Kings 10:22 adds, “For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of Hiram…” We are grateful for all of our Sailors and Marines who have and continue to patrol the seas protecting our national interests at home and abroad.
