Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. I am sure we all know the traditional ways to celebrate Thanksgiving such as giving thanks, eating turkey, watching the Macy’s parade, and catching a football game; but were you aware of these other, stranger Thanksgiving traditions: turkey bowling, turkey trotting, turkey eating, turkey tossing, or pie throwing? Turkey bowling uses a frozen turkey as the ball and either cans or bottles as pins. Turkey trotting involves dressing up as a turkey and running a 3-5 mile race for charity. Competitive turkey eating is obvious, but did you know that Joey Chestnut currently holds the record of eating 9 pounds of turkey in 10 minutes? If eating turkey makes you sleepy, eating 9 pounds of it could put you in a coma! The turkey toss takes a frozen turkey, dresses it in a baby onesie, lights it on fire, and measures how far it can be hurled hammer-throw style. Pie throwing is just what you are thinking: throwing pies at the faces of teachers or other celebrities–with their permission, of course. No matter how you decide to observe Thanksgiving today, remember the admonition from I Timothy 6:17 and celebrate with a thankful heart and an attitude of gratitude toward “…God who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.”
