Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. On this date in history, in 1604, Guy Fawkes was arrested for his conspiracy in the so-called “Gunpowder Plot.” Guy Fawkes was a zealous Catholic who intended to murder Parliament and King James I of England by exploding 20 barrels of gunpowder placed in the basement of the Parliament building; Fawke’s intent of the plot was to replace Protestantism in England with Catholicism. Guy Fawkes Day is still celebrated every year in England on this date by making bonfires and launching fireworks. What does any of this have to with us? King James I is responsible for authorizing the translation of the Scriptures that bears his name. Since the KJV was first published in 1611, had the Gunpowder Plot of 1604 been successful, King James would not have been alive to direct and authorize what eventually became the most influential English translation of the Scriptures in history. While I am not opposed to other English translations, I do use the KJV both devotionally and publicly to proclaim God’s Word to His people. God says in Isaiah 55:11, that His Word, whether in Hebrew, Greek, English, Spanish, or Chinese, “shall not return void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
