Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today’s “Throwback Thursday” is from Tuesday, September 22, 2020. I love our national anthem. As a musician, I must confess that the music presents a range challenge for vocalists, but I love the anthem regardless. I especially appreciate the last verse that expresses our national motto, “In God we trust” as “in God is our Trust.” As far as I know, every nation has a national anthem, and no nation has multiple national anthems. When our national anthem is played or sung, citizens of our nation are expected and honored to stand. A few years back, professional athletes began kneeling during the national anthem; this is disrespectful and disgraceful, but our Constitution protects this freedom of expression. Apparently, the United States has another national anthem for which athletes who kneel for “The Star Spangled Banner” like to stand. It is no secret that I am not a sports fan; however, I would not attend or even watch any activity that promotes or allows this unpatriotic behavior. If athletes want to protest and show disrespect on their own time, let them do so; but I refuse to let them do so on my time. By now, we have all heard and read many times before, “I stand for the flag and kneel for God.” This phrase does not just make a great T-shirt or facebook post, these are words by which I intend to live, and I invite you to do the same.
