Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today in history, back in 1884, the Washington Monument was completed when workers placed a nine inch aluminum pyramid atop the while marble obelisk inscribed with the words, “Laus Deo,” which means “Praise be to God.” Construction on the monument began in 1848 but was halted in 1861 due to low funds caused partially by the Civil War. Construction was resumed in 1876; still today, you can see the difference in color between the original and later construction. The Washington Monument is made of 36,000 blocks of marble and granite reaching a height of 555 feet. At the time of its completion, the monument was the tallest structure in the world; it is still the tallest freestanding stone building in the world, and it will always be the tallest structure in Washington, DC, due to a 1910 city law mandating it. Think about this: the highest point in the most powerful city in the world gives God praise! George Washington was one of America’s godly Founding Fathers who famously said, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.” He also said, “To the distinguished character of a patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of a Christian.” And don’t forget that George Washington’s first official presidential proclamation was a day of thanksgiving to God in 1789.
