Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today’s “Throwback Thursday” is from Tuesday, October 19, 2020. Do you like licorice? I don’t, and black licorice is the worst candy ever, in my opinion. I can’t understand why someone would invent a candy that tastes bad and why people would buy and eat it. I would not eat black licorice anyway, but I have a new reason to avoid it. A man in Massachusetts died last month after unintentionally overdosing on black licorice. Black licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid which lowers potassium levels in the body leading to abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure, and congestive heart failure. The man reportedly ate a bag or more of black licorice each day, and doctors say that’s what killed him. The Bible teaches us to live lives of self control—not excess; indeed, a facet of the fruit of the Spirit is temperance, or self-control. Galatians 5:22 states, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness faith, meekness, temperance…” Generally speaking, too much of anything is not good, and when it comes to eating black licorice, any amount is always too much.
