Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. It’s no secret that I am fascinated by snakes, but I don’t want to own one—or wear one. Border patrol busted a guy last month for attempting to smuggle 52 reptiles into the United States from Mexico, nine of which were snakes. He did not have the reptiles in a box or gym bag—they were in his jacket, pants, and underwear! It seems he had hoped to just slither across the border unnoticed. We are all familiar with the Bible’s most infamous snake in the Garden of Eden, but are you familiar with the snake on the pole? God sent poisonous snakes to the Israelites as punishment in the wilderness. When Moses cried out to God for mercy, God told Moses to make a brass snake on a pole and hold it up. When people were bitten by a snake on the ground, they could look up to the snake on the pole and be healed. What makes this story even more interesting is that Jesus compared Himself to the snake on the pole in John 3:14-15 saying, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the Son of Man be lifted up. That Whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” We’ve all been lethally bitten by our sin, so we all need a Savior; Jesus The Savior was lifted up on a cross to die for our sins. If we trust in Him, we will be eternally healed. The other interesting thing about snakes and healing is that the medical field uses the Caduceus as a symbol of their profession. Did you ever look closely at it? It is snakes on poles!
