Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. WARNING: this podcast contains a crude, historical quote. Today is Texas Independence Day. I am a Texan, and I could not be more proud of our history and heroes: The Alamo, San Jacinto, Colonel William Travis, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, And General Sam Houston (incidentally, I was born at Fort Sam Houston). Independence is a wonderful condition, but it flies in the face of sound doctrine and good theology. While Texans are proud of our independence and Americans are proud of theirs as codified in the Declaration of Independence, Christians are not independent but rather dependent on Our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said in John 15:5, “…without Me ye can do nothing.” In context, Jesus was speaking of bearing spiritual fruit; however, His statement is literally true as well: we are nothing, have nothing, and can do nothing without Him. After losing his campaign for the US Congress, Davy Crockett famously said, “You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.” Just as back then, not everyone is going to Texas, but everyone is going to hell. The only way to avoid going to hell is to receive Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. By the way, if you want to experience a little bit of heaven on earth, go to Texas!
