Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today’s “Throwback Thursday” is from Friday November 13, 2020 I don’t like sand. Sand has a way of getting on and into everything. But did you know that sand is the third most used natural resource in the world next to air and water? While sand is used to make glass, computer chips, paper, paint, food, toothpaste, and cosmetics, sand’s biggest use is for construction. You see, concrete is comprised of 75% sand. An average house uses 200 tons of sand, a hospital 3000 tons, and a mile of highway 15,000 tons. While it may be hard to imagine, the earth’s supply of usable sand is actually running low. How can this be possible with massive deserts in Africa and elsewhere? Desert sand is not commercially usable—the sand we need comes from beaches, lakes and rivers with rivers providing the highest quality. The Bible has many references to sand usually as a simile to relate an incalculable number such as Abraham’s descendants, Solomon’s wisdom, or God’s thoughts of His people. Jesus also taught about the foolish builder who built his house upon the sand: you probably remember the line from children’s song, “The rains came down and the floods came up and the house on the sand fell flat!” Jesus was emphasizing the importance of preparing for eternity by heeding His teachings. I heard an illustration about eternity that uses sand: if a single bird were to take a single grain of sand from the earth in its beak, fly to the moon, drop it there and return until every grain of sand on earth was removed, that is the point at which eternity would just be getting started. Listen to Jesus, prepare for eternity, and get your head out of the sand.
