Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today is Good Friday, but what is good about it? This is the day we commemorate Jesus’ death on the cross. Jesus had been betrayed, arrested, denied, judged, mocked, scourged, and finally crucified. While being crucified, Jesus took upon Himself our sins and, consequently, experienced separation from His Heavenly Father. That’s why Jesus cried out, “My God, My God, Why hast Thou forsaken Me?” How is any of this good? You already know the answer: what happened to Jesus was not good; however, what He did for us is good. I think Good Friday is really misnamed—it should be called Great Friday! Had Jesus not volunteered to go to the cross taking upon Himself our sins, we could never be forgiven, we could never be saved, we could never go to heaven; He did, so we can. Hebrews 12:2 says this about Jesus’ willing sacrifice, “…for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” What joy did Jesus have? The joy of obedience to the Father which would yield the fruit of salvation to all people who believe. Jesus said in Luke 15:11 that heaven erupts in joy when just one person is saved; what must the angels have been doing when Jesus paid the price on the cross for all people to be saved? Some 2000 years ago, Good Friday ended in sadness and defeat, but Easter was coming!
