Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. I’m not opposed to skydiving, but I still have no desire to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. This past weekend, the much hyped “plane swap” was attempted over Arizona. In this stunt, two daredevil pilots were to fly their Cessna airplanes to 12,000 feet, put them both in a nosedive, jump out of their respective planes and fall into each other’s planes. One word comes to mind, “Why?” Anyway, the stunt only went half as well as planned: one pilot made it into the opposite plane, but the other pilot missed his plane. Both pilots were wearing parachutes, so the pilot who missed his plane parachuted to safety. The plane he was supposed to be flying, however, did not fare as well. This just proves what my flight instructor used to tell me about landing; he would say, “Even if you forget how to land, don’t worry, the plane will eventually come down one way or another.” The one pilot missed his plane, and the Bible describes sin as missing the mark. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” The word “sinned” in Greek refers to missing the mark in archery. An archer wants to hit the bullseye; however, when he does not, he has missed the mark. The mark we are trying to hit is God’s glory of perfection, but we all miss the mark, so we all need God’s forgiveness. God forgives His people of all of our sins, but Red Bull, which sponsored this weekend’s plane swap and now owns a crashed $500,000.00 airplane, may not be so willing to be as forgiving.
