On this date in history in 1865, President Lincoln had a dream about a corpse on display in the East Room of the White House with a soldier standing guard by it. Lincoln asked the soldier, “Who is dead at the White House?” The soldier replied, “The President. He was killed by an assassin.” Ten days later, Lincoln was shot and killed by an assassin, John Wilkes Booth. What was the source of this dream? We don’t know, but God certainly knew what was going to happen to Lincoln–even as God knows all things past, present, and future. In the Bible, God often spoke through dreams, so He could have been offering the president a glimpse of his future demise. While God can speak in any way He chooses, today, God speaks primarily through His Word, His people, prayer, and circumstances. If God were informing Lincoln of his impending death, why didn’t God also tell Lincoln to avoid Ford’s Theater? We may never know, but perhaps President Lincoln was inspired to take care of a personal or national matter immediately based on his dream. Perhaps something of eternal significance was settled such as Lincoln’s salvation or someone else’s in his circle of influence. If you were told you had but ten days to live, what would you do, who would you tell? No matter your answer, make sure you are ready to die with or without warning. The Bible is clear in Hebrews 9:27, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgment.”
