Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has just released new guidance calling surface sanitization, “Hygiene theater.” According to the CDC, all of this extra, deep cleaning of classrooms, stadiums, and grocery carts has been unnecessary. COVID-19 is transmitted through the air and, even if it lands on a hard surface, has difficulty finding a new human host. Remember sanitizing the groceries after you brought them home? Not necessary. I remember waiting extra long to ride the Superman roller coaster at Six Flags last summer because every 10 runs the entire train had to be sprayed down with sanitizer and sent around the track empty. Not necessary. Ventilation—not sanitization is the new battleground. Are we to trust this new guidance? The World Health Organization and the CDC have both issued incorrect and conflicting information during the pandemic; as scientific research continues, information should change–but don’t discount the economic and political components of their guidance, either. The reason these organizations are fallible is because they are run by people, and people are fallible. The only guidance we can absolutely trust is from God and His Word both of which are infallible; in fact, God’s Word, in the center verse of the Bible, Psalm 118:8, states, “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” So wash your hands, wear your mask, but worship the Lord.
