Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Did you hear about the bomb squad that was called to Jefferson, MD, to dispose of a piece of military ordinance last month? A Civil War era cannonball was found near the Monocacy Battlefield in Fredrick County intact and potentially explosive. The bomb squad removed the cannonball to a safe location and detonated it. It would have been nice to have preserved this cannonball since it came from the Battle of Monocacy which is otherwise known as “The Battle that Saved Washington.” Who knows? That unexploded cannonball may have saved lives 157 years ago; had it exploded and taken a life or lives, world history could have been changed significantly. Though forbidden, my brothers and I used to ride our bikes out onto the range in Fort Knox, KY, to look for shells and other military artifacts. We had been warned of other children who had visited the range and were either killed or maimed by finding ordinance, but that just made the adventure more exciting to us. I enjoy firearms and explosions, but the original purpose of these inventions was to kill fellow humans in war. I do not like war and look forward to the day when wars will cease as the Prince of Peace rules over the Earth in Peace from the City of Peace. Isaiah 2:4 prophesies of this coming day: “…they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”
