Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. I now live in Pomfret but have lived in Maryland two previous times. As a teenager, I lived in Silver Spring. As a college graduate, I lived in New Carrollton, where I worked in the IT department for the Hechinger Company. New Carrollton was named after Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Maryland’s first Senator, and one of the drafters of the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the US Constitution. Carroll was a true American patriot. Incidentally, as a teenager, Debbie attended Charles Carroll Middle School in New Carrollton. New Carrollton’s original colonial name was “Terrapin Thicket,” due to the unusually large amount of turtles in the area. The 1953 Maryland General Assembly approved the charter for the City of Carrollton. Due to two other areas in Maryland known as Carrollton and confusion over mailing addresses, the residents of Carrollton voted in 1966 to rename the city New Carrollton. According to Revelation 21:2, on the new earth, Jerusalem will also get a new name: New Jerusalem; down in verse 27, we are told that only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life can enter New Jerusalem. Your name is written in that book when you receive Jesus in your heart. New Carrollton is special to me, because it was there at United Baptist Church that I became an AWANA Leader, began reading my Bible every day, publicly surrendered to the ministry, and married the lovely Mrs. Debbie.
