Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. You may remember the bizarre low speed police chase of OJ Simpson back in 1994, but did you hear about the really, really low speed police chase in rural Ohio last Saturday? The vehicle involved was one horsepower…literally. An Amish man was driving his horse and buggy erratically, and the police officer suspected the buggy driver was drunk. The officer parked his vehicle in front of the slow-moving buggy, walked up to the buggy, and told the driver to pull over; but the officer’s commands were ignored. The buggy rammed into the police cruiser, the Amish man was ejected from the buggy, and that ended the chase. I suppose I could comment on Romans 13:1-2 where Paul writes about obeying the law which covers obedience to police officers, drunk driving, and wearing seat belts; however, Paul’s command in Ephesians 5:18 which states, “Be not drunk with wine…” seems to be a better application; combining that with Romans 14:21 where we are told not to use alcohol to cause another to stumble provides the Baptist justification for alcoholic abstinence. Had this Amish man not been drinking in the first place, this incident would not have occurred. Remember, when it comes to alcohol you don’t need it to survive, you don’t need it to thrive, and using it may ruin your life. Please note: no officers or animals were injured in this accident or in the recording of this message.
