Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. I’m no movie buff, but I have heard that a new Top Gun movie called “Top Gun: Maverick” is now in theaters. What I want to focus on is the F/A-18 Super Hornet jets that are used in the movie. Though Tom Cruise holds a pilot’s license, he did not actually get to fly one of these beauties, per Navy regulations, but he could afford to. These jets cost $11,000 an hour to fly! What makes operating these jets so expensive? First of all, you have to buy one which costs 67 million dollars. Then you have to put fuel in it which is currently $8.00 per gallon; burning 1100 gallons per hour puts fuel costs at about $9000.00 per hour. And to think you’ve been complaining about your pain at the pump! Finally, you need a naval pilot to fly the thing; on average, naval pilots make about $117,000 per year. So it takes a lot of money to fly these jets, and it takes a lot of money to make a movie; “Top Gun:Maverick” reportedly cost $17 million dollars to film. The thing is all of this money is temporary—no one will take any of it into eternity. Jesus taught in Matthew 6:20-21 to “lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven” because “where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.” We can choose temporal treasures or eternal treasures. Only a fool would choose the temporal over the eternal, but tragically, that’s what most people do.
