Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today in history, in 1777, the Continental Congress adopted our nation’s new flag as designed by Betsy Ross which was thirteen alternating red and white stripes with a blue union on which were thirteen stars “representing a new constellation.” As new states were added to the nation, additional stars and stripes were added. In 1818, Congress took away the additional stripes but kept the additional stars. On this date in history, in 1877, the first Flag Day was observed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the adoption of our national flag. In 1949, Congress designated June 14th as Flag Day which happens to be today. The national flag is important because it represents our nation: the freest, most prosperous nation in history. Our nation certainly has problems, programs, and personalities that are antithetical to our founding principles and documents; even so, we are a nation blessed of God as no other. Israel did not have a national flag in Bible times; however, each tribe of Israel had its own unique flag, called standards. When the nation camped around the tabernacle in the wilderness, their standards were flown to designate each tribe’s location. So today on Flag Day, proudly display our national flag as it represents “one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”
