Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. I am pro-life; I know that a child in the womb is a child—not a clump of cells. I believe that each person whether inside or outside the womb is created in the image of God and possesses infinite worth and dignity; however, an expectant mother in Dallas, TX, has me scratching my head. This woman was in a hurry, so she decided to drive in the HOV lane. She was subsequently pulled over by the police for being alone in the car while driving in a lane that requires a minimum of two occupants. She argued with the arresting officer citing the recently overturned Roe v. Wade that she and her baby make two people thus fulfilling the letter of the law. The officer disagreed and issued her a $215.00 ticket that she intends to appeal. The Texas vehicle code does not recognize unborn babies as persons for HOV purposes, but Texas law does recognize an unborn baby as a person. Here we see an inconsistency between the law and the code which politicians will need to address. My opinion is that the woman fulfilled the letter of the law but not the spirit of the law. She chose to take advantage of the law for her own selfish desires. There were two people in her car, but they were taking up only one seat. By the way, since the woman that was in such a hurry got pulled over, she spent a lot more time arguing with the officer and being ticketed than if she had followed the spirit of the law and stayed out of the HOV lane in the first place.
