Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Different places celebrate different things. Back in Waynesburg, PA, near where I used to live, today is Rain Day. Rain Day is probably the only annual celebration that hopes to get rained out. Rain Day has a parade, a queen, entertainment, a street fair, an umbrella contest, and a rain drop mascot. What everybody hopes will happen on Rain Day is rain! In fact, the mayors of Waynesburg have been betting on it to rain every year for 148 years. Waynesburg’s mayors always bet a hat to some local or national celebrity: if it rains, the mayor gets a hat from the celebrity; if it doesn’t rain, the celebrity gets a hat from the mayor. Past notable celebrities have been Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, The Three Stooges, Mohammed Ali, Arnold Palmer, Punxatawney Phil, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Mr. Rogers, and Donald Trump. Since it has rained 118 out of the past 148 years, or 78% of the time, Waynesburg’s mayor is more than likely to win the bet and a new hat. By the way, Donald Trump lost his bet—rather ironic for a man who owns casinos! Rain is essential to our survival, and God gives rain to His Creation; that’s why Ezekiel 34:26 calls rain, “showers of blessing.” Jesus said in Matthew 5:45 that God “sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” Will it rain on Waynesburg’s parade today? God only knows, but Waynesburg’s citizens are hoping it does!
