Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. And now a local interest story from Montgomery County. An old reel-to-reel tape recently helped solve a 51 year old cold case murder of Sheriff’s Deputy James Hall on October 23, 1971, in Rockville. Police detectives could not figure out who-dun-it—until last week. Two detectives were assigned to look at the case evidence again about a year ago. The reel-to-reel recording lead them to Larry David Becker in Little Falls, Upstate New York, who had changed his name to Larry David Smith. Smith was a person of interest in the original investigation but was not a suspect. Smith, now 71 years old, had also recently posted some incriminating information on Facebook. When detectives arrived at Smith’s apartment, he confessed and surrendered. Numbers 32:23 states, “and be sure your sin will find you out.” After a half century, Smith thought he had gotten away with murder, but he hadn’t. God knew all along that Smith was guilty, and he has now been brought to justice. People misunderstand God’s patience and providence, and they assume that His justice delayed is justice denied. God is very patient with personal and national sin, but He is not indifferent to it—He is offended by it and will judge it. President Thomas Jefferson was horrified at the sinful condition of our nation in his time stating, “Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that His justice cannot sleep forever.” What would President Jefferson think of our nation now?
