Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today’s “Throwback Thursday” is from Thursday, August 13, 2020. You’ve probably all heard about the earthquake in North Carolina last Sunday, but did you know that it was Scripturally prompted? According to the priest of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church near Charlotte, last Sunday’s reader was reading from I Kings chapter 19 about the prophet Elijah that says, “After the wind an earthquake…” Upon reading the passage, the 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit. The priest said he didn’t feel it, but his parishioners did. The rest of the verse says, “…but the Lord was not in the earthquake.” Apparently, God was not speaking specifically through that earthquake, according to the passage. God does speak through nature, however; theologians call this “general revelation.” The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 1:20 that by observing nature everyone knows that there is a God so that no one will have an excuse on the day of judgment. General revelation is not enough to save someone; salvation requires special, or specific revelation. Special revelation occurs when God personally reveals himself to someone as Lord and Savior in a gracious act that generates faith. We all see God’s general revelation, but have you experienced God’s special revelation?
