Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. You are certainly familiar with the iconic picture of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square on August 14, 1945, the day Japan surrendered to the Allies in WWII; but did you know that the sailor was on a first date with another girl when he kissed the nurse? In the picture, his date is standing just to the left of the smoochers. Did you also know that the other girl ended up marrying the sailor even though he kissed the nurse? Did you further know that the nurse was not actually a nurse but a dental assistant? I say all of that to inform you that on this date in history, in 1945, Japan formally surrendered in writing aboard the USS Missouri under the commanding eye of General Douglas MacArthur. General MacArthur chose the USS Missouri since she had seen plenty of action in the Pacific theater plus then-President Harry Truman was from Missouri. Truman had effectively ended the war in the Pacific by authorizing the dropping of two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Without Japan’s forced surrender, a very bloody attack on the Japanese mainland would be next on the wartime agenda. The Bible is full of war because the world is full of sin. God desires and offers peace. One day, the Prince of Peace will rule over the earth at peace from the City of Peace, Jerusalem. According to Revelation 20:4, this peace will last 1000 years and, though briefly interrupted, will be followed by an eternity of peace.
