Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Irony occurs when the outcome of a particular circumstance is the opposite of what is expected—often in an amusing fashion. Local radio host, Chris Plante, frequently says that members of a certain political party have no sense of irony; this is certainly the case with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC. AOC attended the exclusive $30,000-per-ticket MetGala in New York City wearing a custom-made dress that said in large, bold, red letters, “Tax the Rich” across it. That’s ironic, since only a rich person could afford to attend the event in a custom-made dress; however, the irony gets better: it has been revealed that the designer of the “Tax the Rich” dress has a net worth of two million dollars and refuses to pay taxes owed to the federal government and to multiple states. The Bible has no problem with rich people, and neither does it have a problem with citizens—both rich and poor–paying taxes. Paul reminds the rich in I Timothy 6:17 not to trust in their riches but to trust in God and to be rich in good works. Paul commands believers in Romans 13:7 to pay “tribute to whom tribute is due.” Jesus’ definitive statement on taxation is found in Matthew 22:21 where Jesus says, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.” As far as the rich are concerned, remember that compared to most of the rest of the entire world, you are rich!
