Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today’s “Throwback Thursday” is from Friday, January 29, 2021. A recent study has determined that using swear words is a sign of intelligence. That seems strange to me, because when I hear people curse, my first thought is that they have a very limited vocabulary and are unable to express themselves in a thoughtful, articulate manner. Supposedly, participants in this study were able to accomplish greater verbal tasks if they used curse words; swearing was also linked to honesty, creativity, and an increased pain threshold. The whole study was predicated on the assumption that swearing is the result of evolution, which means that people who swear are not responsible for their behavior. Regardless of what the study findings may show, the Bible commands in Ephesians 4:29, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth but that which is good to the use of edifying that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” The word “corrupt” means “rotten” and is not limited to curse words but certainly includes them. I don’t use curse words, and I don’t like to hear curse words—that’s why I don’t watch a lot of current TV and movies. While people may use bad words to make themselves sound tough or cool, these words actually uncover the contents of our hearts. Jesus said in Luke 6:45 that out “of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” If rottenness is coming out of your mouth, then rottenness is in your heart. Consider the words you use: what do your words reveal about your heart?
