Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. As you have certainly heard by now, monkeypox has reached our country, and Washington, DC, is ground zero for the infection! What is monkeypox? It is a cousin of the smallpox virus which produces skin lesions after flu-like symptoms. The smallpox vaccination provides protection for monkeypox, so those vaccinated should be covered; however, the US discontinued widespread smallpox vaccinations in 1972. There is a vaccination for monkeypox, but not everyone can get it. Priority is being given to prostitutes and homosexual men, since the virus is most commonly spread among these groups. Since I have the smallpox vaccination, and the circular scar on my arm to prove it, I do not need a monkeypox vaccination; but if I did, I would feel discriminated against. I do not understand rewarding immoral behavior with medical priority—especially when the spread of the virus can be stopped by a change in behavior. Can you imagine the public uproar if a vaccine were being prioritized for straight, Caucasian men? People love sin, but God loves people more that we love sin. That’s why He sent His only Son to die on the cross to pay for all sin. When one receives Christ as Savior, he receives complete forgiveness; however, some love their sin too much to repent and receive the forgiveness He offers.
