Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Do you remember the purple character from McDonald’s that was always stealing milkshakes? His name was Grimace. While I do not believe in biological evolution, I do believe in commercial evolution. Grimace originally had four arms with which to steal multiple milkshakes; however, his character evolved to have two arms, and his disposition changed to be a good–albeit clumsy–sidekick of Ronald McDonald with no thieving intentions. What was this fictional character anyway? As it turns out, Grimace was an oversized taste bud! If you look at a human taste bud under magnification, you will see a Grimace. Having a tongue full of Grimaces allows people and animals to enjoy the food that we must eat in order to survive. God has graciously granted people with five senses: taste, sight, smell, hearing, and touch. While people can live without these senses, life is greatly enhanced through each of them. When asked which sense people would voluntarily give up, we find it hard to choose one because they are all so valuable to us. The Bible addresses all five senses throughout its pages, but the only passage that comes closest to listing all five is Psalm 115:5-7 which compares lifeless idols to the living God, “They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not. They have ears, but they hear not; noses have they, but they smell not. They have hands, but they handle not…” The only sense left out is taste, but an idol can’t do that, either. Thank God for giving us something evolution never could: life and the senses to enjoy it!
