God’s Grace with Gary 12/1/21

Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. We’ve all been to Waldorf, Maryland, at least a time or two. After all, the mall as well as many restaurants and doctors offices are located there. Did you know that Waldorf’ was originally named “Beantown” after a local family? In fact, Maryland Route 5 is still called Mattawoman-Beantown Road. Waldorf got its present name in 1880 by an act of the Maryland General Assembly which named the town after the then-richest man in America, William Waldorf Astor, whose great-grandfather was from Walldorf, Germany, hence the middle name. Have you ever heard of the exclusive Waldorf-Astoria hotels? That’s the same William Waldorf Astor family. Interestingly, both the Waldorf Salad and room service were invented at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel. Knowing all this makes you want to give our Waldorf a little more respect now, doesn’t it? While there are many famous towns in the Bible, I think my favorite is Bethlehem, which means, “House of Bread.” Jesus was born in Bethlehem and grew up to claim that He was “The Bread of Life” in John 6:35. Jesus went on to say in the same verse, “He that cometh to Me shall never hunger, and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst.” Jesus is all we need both for time and eternity!
