Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today’s “Throwback Thursday” is from Tuesday, October 20, 2020. The Titanic sank 108 years ago in 1912, but is still one of the most famous shipwrecks of all time. The Titanic was deemed at the time as being “practically unsinkable,” and its owner boastfully stated, “Not even God could sink this ship.” Such hubris is utterly foolish, because God can do anything He wants to do, anytime He wants to do it, and anyway He wants to do it. The Titanic represented the epitome of human pride at the time of which the Bible warns in Proverbs 16:18, “pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Fifteen hundred souls perished during the tragedy, but some of the ill-fated passengers were serenaded by a string ensemble playing the hymn, “Nearer My God to Thee.” “Nearer My God to Thee” was written by Sarah Flower Adams in the early 1800s to retell the Story of Jacob’s ladder from Genesis 28. Jesus interpreted Jacob’s ladder as being Himself in John 1:51 where He says, “Verily, verily I say unto you, hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.” Jacob saw a ladder connecting heaven and earth, and Jesus is that ladder teaching in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by Me.” Human pride boasts of human accomplishments and independence and will result in both temporal and eternal destruction. Godly humility acknowledges human weakness and dependence which will result in both temporal and eternal exaltation.
