Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today is Mardi Gras, which is French for “Fat Tuesday.” Mardi Gras is a day, but it is also a season. I lived in New Orleans, so I have experienced both the season and the day. If you know what you are doing and where to go, you can have a lot of wholesome, family fun during the season; however, the day is to be shunned for both moral and theological reasons. The theology behind Mardi Gras is that God turns His back on all Mardi Gras Day activities permitting people to do whatever they want to do with no repercussions as long as they repent by midnight on Ash Wednesday. The New Orleans City police strictly enforce this theology by clearing the streets at midnight; they don’t care where you go or what you do, but you better be inside! One of the fun desserts of the Mardi Gras season is King Cake which is basically a huge donut with a plastic baby hidden inside. Whoever finds the baby is supposed to be lucky but also has to buy the next King Cake. Who is the baby in the cake? It is Jesus, but that is not why King Cake is called King Cake; the cake is baked in honor of the wise men, or kings, who visited Jesus sometime after He was born. As far as God’s not being concerned about sinful behavior goes, that can’t be true because God sent His only Son to die to pay for the sins of all who believe; and for those who don’t believe, Revelation 20:12 states that unbelievers will be “judged out of those things which were written in the books according to their works.”
