Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today’s “Throwback Thursday” is from Tuesday, October 27, 2020. You may be tired of election news, but this story is rather amusing. In Russian politics, no candidate for public office can run unopposed—the people must have a choice. The mayor of Povalikhino was running unopposed, so he asked a cleaning lady in city hall to run against him. As a favor to the mayor, the cleaning lady ran…and won! As it turns out, the city didn’t like their mayor, so the 242 person town voted to 62% to 34% for the cleaning lady! No one was more surprised than the cleaning lady who considered resigning immediately following her unexpected victory; however, the doubling of her salary from cleaning to governing provided inspiration for her to try her hand at politics. The Bible is full of stories of God’s elevating the unlikely to prominent positions such as Joseph and Moses in Egypt, Saul and David in Israel, Jesus in Nazareth, and Peter in Capernaum. What is true of biblical characters is true of every believer in Jesus Christ: we are all sinners unlikely to ever be saved, but then God does save us and elevate us to the status of being His very children. John 1:12 reminds us, “But as many as received Him to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.” The old Southern Gospel song, reminds us of our humble status, “I’m just a sinner, saved by grace.”
