Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. On this date in history in 2010, Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater became an instant hero to the overworked and over-stressed American worker by quitting his job via the airplane PA system stating, “I’ve been in this business for 20 years. And that’s it. I’ve had it. I’m done.” He then deployed the airplane escape slide and exited the plane in dramatic fashion. Once Slater was on the tarmac, he remembered that he had left his luggage on board, so he climbed back up the slide, retrieved his luggage, and left again in slightly less dramatic fashion. After this incident, Slater was booked on national talk shows, offered product endorsements and his own reality TV show. In the legal case that followed, it turns out that Slater was upset with a passenger, but Slater had also consumed multiple “adult beverages” prior to his tirade. Drunkenness is a sin, and just like any other sin, alcohol abuse will take you further than you want to go, cost you more than you want to pay, and keep you longer than you want to stay. Slater lost his job and was ordered to pay Jet Blue $10,000.00 for the emergency slide. Ephesians 5:18 states, “Be not drink with wine wherein is excess…” Excess as it is used here is sometimes translated, “reckless indiscretion”: that about sums up the Slater story.
