Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Today’s “Throwback Thursday” is from Wednesday, February 3, 2021. First Baptist Church is in La Plata, and many of you live in La Plata. Do you know why La Plata is called La Plata? The Spanish words mean “the silver,” but silver apparently has nothing to do with the name. A Col. Samuel Chapman owned 6000 acres of land in Charles County. The Col. traveled to S. America with his son who had contracted tuberculosis to find a cure. During his travels, the Col. encountered the Rio de la plata River, the silver river, and returned home to name his property, “La Plata.” In the 1870’s, the railroad laid tracks through Charles County and built a station that was later named the La Plata station. Once there was a train station, town incorporation followed in 1888. While many cities are mentioned in the Bible, none is more prominent than Jerusalem. We are introduced to Jerusalem in Genesis 14, David captures it in II Samuel 5, various prophets railed against it, Jesus was crucified there, the millennial kingdom will be ruled from there, and John saw a new Jerusalem coming down to earth from heaven in Revelation 21. No matter your native city or country, all believers are citizens of heaven according to Philippians 3:20, “For our citizenship is in heaven from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
