Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. People have been inventing things since the dawn of creation. As a child, I invented the peanut butter and Doritos sandwich, but I found out later that I was actually not the first to do so. One of the latest inventions to come out of COVID is the “Blowzee,” a device to blow out birthday candles without blowing germs all across the birthday cake. The invention by a dad in Richmond, VA, is basically a tube with a propeller on the end of it. As the birthday boy or girl blows in the tube, a sensor activates an electric motor which causes the propeller to spin and extinguish the candles. All of the germs stay in the tube. Debbie was concerned about this germ-ridden activity long before COVID; blowing out birthday cake candles has been forbidden in our household for decades. Why do we put candles on our cakes anyway? Apparently, the practice goes back to the ancient Greeks who did so to honor their moon goddess, Artemis; that’s also why they baked round cakes: to honor the moon, which is round. Artemis is called “Diana” in the Bible, and the Apostle Paul created quite a stir in Ephesus when he preached against the idolatry associated with her. According to Acts 19:34, the people shouted in protest for two hours, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!” In light of this, I don’t think the Apostle Paul would approve of round birthday cakes with candles. Do you?
