Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Birds are amazing creatures. Some people like birds because of their color schemes; as a pilot, I like birds because they can fly. I am also jealous of birds: it took me a lot of time and money to learn to fly, yet birds are born knowing how. God created birds on day six of creation, and birds have been flying ever since. I suppose the most famous Bible verse about birds is Isaiah 40:31, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings of eagles…” Of course, there is also that great line from Jesus in Matthew 10:31 about people being worth much more than sparrows. Anyway, did you know that La Plata, MD, is Maryland’s first bird city? I didn’t, either. I learned this from reading a lamppost banner downtown. Since I didn’t know what a bird city was, I googled it. It turns out that there is an organization called, “Bird City Maryland,” and when a city enhances its bird environment, educates its people about birds, recognizes the importance of birds to a healthy community, and pays a fee, a city in Maryland can become a “Bird City Maryland”; La Plata was the first city to be recognized for this achievement on February 24, 2020. You may also want to know that on the same date, the La Plata Town Council voted to make the purple martin La Plata’s official town bird. You might say that our city was the early bird who first got its ducks in a row feathering its own nest making other cities eat crow, and we have now gone to the birds.
