Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. Have you heard of the “St. Mary’s County Witch”? Mary Dyer arrived in Maryland in 1677. Due to some strange habits she may have acquired while living in the Virgin Islands, she lived alone, unmarried, and childless; these characteristics made a woman suspect by the general public at that time. In the winter of 1698, an undefined “great affliction” came upon the Leonardtown area, and the people blamed Mary Dyer for it. Rather than try Mary for being a witch, a mob burned down her house hoping she would leave. Mary Dyer survived the fire, but not the bitter cold. A few days later, her frozen body was found kneeling at a rock. When her body was removed from the rock, the imprints of her hand and knees were left behind. The rock is still on display in Leonardtown, but only the brave will dare touch it—the legend states that those who do will experience misfortune. How historically accurate is this? I don’t know, but demons manifest themselves in a multitude of ways including through witches. The most famous witch in the Bible was from Endor; King Saul went to her to attempt to communicate with the dearly departed prophet, Samuel. Exodus 22:18 is very clear, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” Witches, warlocks, sorcerers, fortune tellers, necromancers and the like are not to be consulted or even imitated. By the way, since demons only possess the living, you can touch the Leonardtown rock all you want!
