Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. On this date in history, in the year AD 325, the Council of Nicea concluded. Emperor Constantine convened the council to iron out differences among Christians across the Roman Empire in order to eliminate confusion, controversy, and contention as well as to promote unity and peace within the church. The primary conclusion of the council was that Jesus Christ is eternal: Jesus is fully God and fully human, co-equal, co-eternal, and co-existent with God, The Father, and God, The Holy Spirit. The Nicean Council was responsible for producing the original form of what is now called The Nicean Creed; Baptists are not a creedal people, but we do agree with the theology of the Nicean Creed with the exception of the line that seems to promote baptismal regeneration that may just be echoing Acts 2:38, where Peter says, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…” The Greek word translated “for” can also mean “because of,” so believers are to be baptized because our sins are forgiven. God has always existed as a Trinity, but the Council of Nicea was the first ecumenical body to affirm and publish this essential truth of the Scriptures.
